Q: Where's the other wheel?

A: Real men (Women) don't need two wheels.
A: I'm paying for it in instalments.
A: You're kidding, it was there last time I looked (and promptly fall off).
A: I got the bike on sale, half off...I didn't realise they meant the bike.
A: This is the recession model.
A: Two wheels? That's twice as hard!
A: My other wheel? Why, I don't need a training wheel anymore! (my favourite, to bike riders)
A: etc..............

Q: Unicycle History

The most accepted theory for the unicycling appearance is that it was found by accident when riding a penny farthing.

The penny farthing had a tendency for its small rear wheel to lift off the ground when the rider wanted to slow down quickly. Some riders discovered they could stay balanced with the rear wheel in the air for a long time. They then decided that the rear wheel, frame and handlebars were also superfluous. And so, unicycling was discovered...

Q: Places to ride

Many riders use the pavement when they ride outside : mostly for safety reasons. Motorists don't really cope well with bicyclists in many places, let alone a unicycle.

Freestyle riding can generally be found in halls, gyms or car parks. Look in the Roster of Unicyclists for more local riders.

See the Calendar for local clubs that meet regularly, and national events that we will be at. For international events, check out the www.unicycle.com and www.unicycle.uk.com events calendars.

Muni riders can be found where ever you find the mountain bikers. They love the single track as much as the bikes do and always gain great respect for their abilities.

Once every 2 years the World Championships are held, these are called UNICON. This is a massive event with thousands of competitors from all over the world. The skill level at these event is amazingly high, but this being said everyone is welcomed, even out right beginners. Check the IUF website and the UNICON 12 website for information about this event.

Q: What is a Unicycle?

The unicycle. What a mysterious and fascinating device. Unfortunately, in the past, this discipline seemed to be out of reach, but today, it's the "in" sport... It's an excellent activity to keep in shape and to have fun.

Unicycling represents a real challenge for everybody who tries it. But despite what you think, it's an attainable discipline. You simply have to perservere.

With good instructions, the fears and apprehensions of the beginner rapidly disappear and unicycling becomes a safe activity that you can practice with complete peace of mind.  It is a skill you can learn at any age.

Q: Unicycle Benefits

Recent scientific research demonstrated that unicyclists have improved concentration, balance and motor coordination. This activity plays an important role on the physical and mental development.

In response to this research, the Japanese Educational Department officially recognized this discipline. Unicycling has been integrated into primary schools' physical education programs. Today, there are over a milion unicyclists in Japan.

An International Unicycling Federation was founded in Japan, June 1st 1982 and further to the elaboration of a structure and a regulation for this sport, the Federation sanctioned the first World Unicycling Championship which took place in Syracuse, New York, in 1984.
